New Sunrise Preschool C Teacher's Guide Unit 1
T6 Social and Emotional Learning New Sunrise helps students put into practice a variety of skills, which are essential for them to recognize their emotions (as well as other people’s), solve problems related to daily tasks and challenges, and build respectful relationships. This may continue to provide benefits for children for months, or even years, after they have had these experiences: academic performance, social skills and avoidance of negative behaviors. The series focuses on five abilities, which are developed in many ways across many settings: Self-awareness. The ability to recognize one’s own emotions, thoughts and values, and how they influence behavior. • Identifying emotions • Accurate self-perception • Recognizing strengths and limitations • Self-confidence Self-management. The ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts and behaviors in different situations. It also refers to the ability to set personal and academic goals. • Impulse control • Stress management • Self-discipline • Self-motivation • Goal-setting • Organizational skills Social awareness. The ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, and to recognize the importance of family, school and community support. • Perspective-taking • Empathizing • Appreciating diversity • Respecting others Relationship. The ability to establish and maintain healthy interactions. • Communication • Social engagement • Relationship-building • Teamwork Responsible decision-making. The ability to make choices about personal behavior and social interactions based on ethical standards, safety concerns, and social rules. • Identifying problems • Analyzing situations • Solving problems • Evaluating • Reflecting • Ethical responsibility Soft CLIL New Sunrise considers the English class a fruitful epistemological site where it is possible to develop academic and second language skills simultaneously. Based on this conviction, the series incorporates cognitively-appropriate topics from three subject areas, enabling children to listen, read, talk and, eventually, write about contents they are currently involved with at school. It is advisable that English teachers collaborate with social studies, science and math teachers on the lesson plans provided in this Teacher’s Guide, in order to make learning even more fascinating. Task-based Approach New Sunrise combines the concepts of communication and language learning into one: task . Each unit has a final task in the form of a project, which also works as an assessment. In order to get to the project, students must go through different preparatory activities. For example, before getting to a final artwork about the parts of the house, they need to complete ten lessons where they develop a variety of activities, including pre-, while- and post-reading exercises and mini tasks related to cross-curricular topics.
