Progress Indicators and Assessment Vocabulary and Expressions Materials Monstry Is Beautiful Part 3 Before Reading Use prediction as a reading strategy. Have students carefully observe the illustrations on page 16 without reading the speech bubbles. Ask students to identify the faces of the characters, their expressions, the body parts they are looking at, etc. As a class, discuss what is happening in the story. Then, remind students that this is the final part of the unit’s short story. Play Monstry is Beautiful (Parts 1 and 2) so students can remember what has happened before. Finally, ask them what they think it is going to happen at the end, considering the previous parts. While Reading Play Monstry is Beautiful (Part 3) twice. Then, ask students to read the short story aloud. Next, play the audio again and have students run their fingers under the text in the speech bubbles as they listen. Make sure that students understand that the other monsters were being silly when they were only thinking about how Monstry was different to them, but that they were all happy when they realized they were all beautiful. Predicting is a very useful strategy that improves students understanding of readings. Asking students to make predictions helps them to go beyond the facts and can help them infer meanings, recall facts, and draw conclusions. You can carry out prediction activities by drawing charts on the board, using graphic organizers or just asking questions. Teaching Tip Graphic organizers are helpful for children to organize and understand contents: readings, timelines, etc. They can be word webs or simple charts. Teaching Tip Use a graphic organizer to sum up what happens in the story. Draw five squares on the board and write the words happy, sad, bored, mad, and scared under each box. Ask students to copy the chart in their notebooks and draw simple faces to represent each feeling. Help students with their drawings. Next, say a feeling and ask them to show to the class the scenes when Monstry felt that way in the short story. Ask students if they would have felt the same being in Monstry’s shoes. As an alternative you can create a handout with the graphic organizer for students to draw in. Extra Activity Week 3 Draw five faces on the board, representing these feelings: scared, happy, bored, mad, and sad . Divide the class into two groups. Have a classroom competition. Ask one student from each group to come to the front of the class. Tell them in secret one feeling. They have to mimic the feeling for the rest of the group. The first group to guess the feeling gets a point. Extra Activity After Reading Divide the class into groups of four. Encourage students to act out the whole short story from their Student’s Books (Parts 1, 2, and 3). Then, distribute sheets of paper. Invite students to draw and color two scenes from the story Monstry Is Beautiful . They can choose the first one, but the second one has to be the last scene. Tell them that they have to show the feelings from the story with their character’s faces. Make sure students understand the conclusion that we all come in different sizes and shapes, which makes us different and beautiful, and we need to respect and value others regardless of their looks.
