10 Lesson 4 Monstry Is Beautiful Part 2 Week 2 Before Reading Start off by clapping rhythmically seven times to the tune of the song Twinkle Twinkle Little Star . Then, have students follow you, singing and clapping too. Next, play the songs I Have Feelings and I AmHappy! to continue with the clapping game. Tell students that the song I Have Feelings has the same pattern of seven claps in each line. Repeat the clapping game so they can notice it by themselves. Also, explain that I AmHappy! combines different clapping patterns. Repeat the clapping game, so they can notice it by themselves. Finally, draw on the board a sad face, a bored face and a mad face. Point to the faces and say: I am sad/mad/bored . Play the song I Have Feelings again and ask some volunteers to come to the front of the class, sing along, and act out the feelings in the song. Adapt clapping and key vocabulary to well- known musical tunes and have some fun with students. Bring a full-length mirror to class or take students to a classroom where mirrors can be found. Practice with students’ body parts by saying: Look at my (legs)! The student in front of the mirror must repeat the sentence and point to his/her legs. Also, practice facial expressions by saying: I am/get sad/ mad/bored . The student in front of the mirror should repeat the sentence and make the face according to the feeling. Extra Activity Ask students to sit in a circle and give a soft ball to one of them. Play the song I Am Happy! When the song starts, have students pass the ball around the circle. Pause the song and ask the student with the ball to act out the last line from the song. Play the song until everyone gets a chance to act out a line. Extra Activity Materials While Reading Have students look at page 10. Invite them to point to Monstry after you ask: Who is Monstry? Say: Look at his (body part) , and have students point to the specific body part in the illustration. Ask them what would happen if they made fun of someone else. Tell them that people will feel bored or mad. Next, play Monstry Is Beautiful (Part 2). Then, play it twice, pausing after each speech bubble, and have students repeat it. After Reading Read the story aloud to students and have them repeat it after you. Then, hand out two sheets of paper to each student. Ask them to write on one sheet: I’m bored, and on the other one: I’m mad . Explain to them that they have to draw and color themselves expressing those feelings. Ask some students to stand up and show their work to the class.
