New Sunrise Preschool C Teacher's Guide Unit 1

9 Lesson 3 Math Warm up Have pairs come to the front of the class. Ask students to take turns and ask each other: What is this? , pointing at their body parts. Then, invite the other member of the pair answer with single words using the key vocabulary. Presentation Talk to students about their own bodies and how their left half appears to be identical to their right half. Then, ask students to sit in a circle. Cut an apple into two halves and reflect with your students on the symmetry pattern of both halves by passing each half around the circle. Next, cut other fruits in halves and pass them around. Finally, ask the students with the halves of each fruit to find each other, stand up together, and show to the rest of the class how the parts make a whole. Practice Explain to students that they are going to complete Monstry’s body in the picture. Have them look at the stickers in the Student’s Book carefully. Then, point to the second blank space of the jigsawpuzzle and ask students to hold up the sticker they should paste there. Continue with the rest of the stickers. Walk around the classroom and help students to paste them correctly. Then, tell students that since they have to color some parts to make Monstry’s body whole, they should pick the same colors used. Have them display the colors they will use and make sure they are appropriate. Next, ask them to color the body. Finally, explain that they have to draw lines with a pencil to match Monstry’s body parts with their names. Go around the classroom to check students’ work. Monstry’s knees, Monstry’s knees. Monstry’s toes, Monstry’s toes. He is Monstry, he is Monstry. Circle time is a classroom technique that gives teachers group control and helps children focus their attention. You can arrange students in a circle sitting on a carpeted floor or in their chairs, and then call out target vocabulary for them to repeat or ask them to follow commands. Teaching Tip Rereading activities help students develop their literacy skills, rethink messages, and improve their memory skills. If rereading activities are complemented by reading aloud instructions, they also help to enhance student’s pronunciation. Teaching Tip Say the key vocabulary of the page. Then, pair off students and have them take turns to reread aloud the names of the body parts in the picture of Monstry. Extra Activity Hand out a photocopy of page T212 with the jigsaw puzzle of Richie’s face. Explain to students that half of the face is complete and the other half has dotted lines for them to trace. First, have students trace the dotted lines. Then, ask them to color the black parts on the right side to match them to the left side. Finally, tell students to color the face. Remind them that both halves of the face should match, so they must use the same colors. Photocopiable Activity Week 1 Materials Application Play the song Monstry’s Body! several times. Then, ask students to sing along. Have them stand in a circle and point to Monstry and Monstry’s body parts as they are mentioned in the song.
