New Sunrise Preschool A Teacher's Guide Unit 1
13 Warm up Tell students that they are going to play a guessing game. Invite a volunteer to come to the front of the class and then whisper one of the following words to him/her: eyes, ears, nose, head, hair or mouth . Then, ask that student to point to that body part on his/her own body. The student who guesses the word should come to the front of the class and repeat the activity. Continue the game until students have practiced all the words, at least, three times. Help the class as necessary. Presentation Beforehand, write each letter of the following words on paper strips, separately: nose, eyes, ears, and mouth . Draw on the board eyes, ears, a nose, and a mouth. Then, put the paper strips in a bag. Next, have students come to the board and take a letter out of the bag. As a class, determine where the letter belongs and tape it under the relevant body part on the board. When you are done completing the words, read them aloud a few times, at random, and have students repeat chorally after you. Application Ask students to share the illustrations they completed. Tell them to pretend they are Rommy and guide them in the following choral repetition: Hello! I am Rommy. Look at my (ears/eyes/nose/mouth). Goodbye! Key • eye(s) • ear(s) • nose • mouth Extended • head • Look at my… • Is this a…or a…? Vocabulary and Expressions • Large pictures of faces • Cutout Pages • Scissors • Glue • Paper strips • Pieces of paper Materials Psychomotor • Performs pasting activities successfully, respecting the boundaries of figures. • Discovers his/her body, recognizing the fundamental parts and places them appropriately. Cognitive • Interprets blocks of written text even without reading them conventionally. • Participates in activities that help him/her broaden his/her knowledge. Affective • Shares with his/her classmates while working. Linguistic • Points to the body parts when the teacher names them. • Constantly practices the words and expressions taught by the teacher. Progress Indicators and Assessment Lesson 7 Science Beforehand, bring large pictures of faces, one per pair, to class. Draw three dividing lines of the same size on the faces. Distribute one face to each pair and instruct them to cut on the lines so each face is divided into three rectangles. Next, give each pair time to mix up the three puzzle pieces and then try to put them together again. You can have pairs of students exchange their puzzles and finally paste them on a piece of paper. Invite them to come to the front of the class with their complete puzzles. Ask: Is this a (nose) or a (mouth)?, pointing to the picture. Continue with the rest of the body parts. Extra Activity Using scissors to cut paper is an activity that requires a lot of practice so students can develop the strength and the skills required. If you see some students struggling with this task, you can let them use a pushpin instead so that they can punch little holes along the outline of the picture and then push the picture out, thus eliminating the need for scissors. Teaching Tip Choral reading exercises are oral activities in which all the students are guided by the teacher to repeat words or sentences together. They provide a safe environment for young learners to develop oral language skills as they do not feel intimidated. Teaching Tip Week 3 Notes: Practice Have students open their books on page 13. Ask them about what they see. See if they remember the name of the mascot (Rommy). Tell students that Rommy is their friend and she will be accompanying them during English class. Explain to them that Rommy does not remember the names of her body parts, so they have to help her. Show students the corresponding cutouts page, point to the words, and read them aloud. Have students cut out the four words. Hold one of the cutouts up and read the word aloud. Have students tell you where to paste it. Next, ask them to paste the body part correctly. Repeat with the rest of the words. Finally, play the audio and have students point to the body part mentioned and say its name.
